1918 CHEVROLET "T" TRUCK
A Restoration Story

The 1918 CHEVROLET Model "T" One-Ton Truck SHOWING IN SERVICE STYLES
In the year 2002, Clive Rodger of Lanark, Ont. said-
"This will be a challenge, and it will take some time"

ABOUT CLIVE RODGER AND HIS RESTORATION PROJECT
The 1918 Model "T" CHEVROLET One-Ton Truck
Clive Rodger retired a few years ago from his place of employment at DUPONT of Canada in Kingston, Ontario.
He then re-located to the area of his birth - Lanark, Ont. where he settled with his wife Alta.
During the the next few years, the neighbours saw a lot of activity around the family homestead, what with renovations to the house and the erection of a workshop behind the house. Thereafter, an endless period of mysterious looking mechanical apparatus were being trucked in and placed in the new workshop and storage building.
Then there were the sounds emitting from the building never heard in the neighbourhood previous to Clive's arrival - some kind of an engine sound , ......swish swish swish, kerboom, .....swish, swish swish, kerboom. Eventually the curious neighbours discovered that their newest neighbour was a master restorer of old hit and miss Gas Engines, that started out as dirty grease covered pieces of iron in various shapes, however, eventually they all sported a nice shiny coat of paint in various colours.
Occasionally these items left the building on a trailer when Clive and his wife travelled to various antique shows around the countryside.
Eventually Clive got his equipment in order, and in between going to farm auction sales, and trips to his hunting camp, he decided to expand his Lanark facility with the purchase of some nearby property.  Shortly thereafter he erected a suitable building for his dream of a place to display his restored equipment and other interesting historical artifacts that one might find in or around an older farmhouse or in the barns and sheds.
As a restorer of hit and miss gas engines, Clive has gained considerable experience working on gas engines that carry the following names- Stickney, Galloway, International, Mogul, New Way, Lister, Massey Harris,  to name just a few - he has restored various models and various sizes.
Recent restorations include a Terra Trac Crawler vintage 1951 model, and Clive has brought to completion in 2009  his working on a 1918 Model "T" CHEVROLET TRUCK .
This story had its beginning in a small country village called LANARK in Eastern Ontario CANADA, located about an hour's drive from the Nation's Capital, Ottawa, and about an hour and a half drive from Lanark to  Kingston at the lower end of Lake Ontario.
"After seeing the remains of an old truck, I just couldn't leave without making arrangements to purchase it. With plans already forming in my mind I felt it would be well worth the effort to save another relic of the past only this time, I will be driving it, not trailering it, as is the case with my restored antique stationary gas engines"
1. THE RESTORATION STORY: CHRONOLOGY -

In September of 2002, the remains of a 1918 Model "T" CHEVROLET one-ton truck was picked up from Ken Drew, at his cottage on Otty Lake, near Perth, Ontario and loaded onto Clive's single axle float trailer and bought home to Lanark. By this time the tires had deteriorated and rotted, the sheet metal had a good coating of rust, and the wooden-spoke wheels would require complete replacement of their hardwood spokes. There was no wood body, just the bare chassis frame, however most of the other elements of the truck were intact such as fenders, hood, windshield frame and 6-volt headlighlight shells.
The radiator was complete and the engine was still intact. Local lore would suggest that this truck was originally used to deliver mail between Perth and Lanark.
2. THE RESTORATION STORY: CHRONOLOGY & SOURCES-

As with every restoration project, you never know when you start where there will be a source for replacement parts, and other necessary items to complete restoration.

In summary, in addition to what he manufactured himself, the following locations indicate just how far from home he had to make contact to order in material or get work done-
CANADA- ONTARIO - Lanark, Perth, Hopetown, Carleton Place, Ottawa, Kingston, Russell, Orillia, and Toronto.
USA - TEXAS and MISSOURI  (through the internet and E-Bay)

The initial restoration commenced with the chassis, with dismantling and sub-contracting out the necessary required work.
- The wooden-spoke wheels were restored with new spokes and trued up.

-The steering wheel porcelain had to be renewed and this was completed by Rick Parks of Orillia, Ont

-The clutch (which is conical in shape originally had factory installed leather) was restored by Bell's Machine Shop in Perth. Bill Bak and Kevin Hall, employees of Bell's Machine Shop,  used a teflon-faced modern material as a substitute for the leather which deteriorates very fast

-The Ottawa Clutch Company relined the brakes. The brake shoes were attached with 7 rivets originally however Clive instructed that an additional 7 rivets should be added making a total of 14.

- The leaf springs were completely dismantled, painted, and replaced with new spring hangers. Clive made a modification in the oiling of the spring hangers - he included a felt strip so as to improve the delivery of oil to the metal parts. Hemp that was originally used was prone to solidifying. Number 30 oil was inserted via the oil cups. New seals were created from leather. This version is not fitted with the modern grease fitting.

- New leather seals were replaced for the rear-end.

-The engine Cowl, Hood and fenders were the first to be sandblasted, primed, and painted c2004.
The hood got a grey primer coat, followed by four finish coats  followed by a clear laquer coat  applied by the late Allan Simpson, of Simpson's Garage in Hopetown, Ont. This Dupont paint is unique, having a colour display of "Black Green" in bright sunlight. The colour turns to jet black, green, dark blue, or grey depending on the light that is cast upon it at given times.

-The Cowl and fenders were primed in grey and then a dark colour, then the final colour coat the same as the hood.

-The woodwork commenced with the floor boards, drivers seat, and rear chassis deck floor. In various stages and dates of completion, the rest of the rear body took shape and finally the roof was installed in 2008. Passenger seats were created by Clive and a tailgate was later completed.
The truck has been outfitted with local rough sawn hardwood that was later planed by Clive in his workshop. Ash, Oak, and Basswood were the hardwood types used plus some pine.

-Ironwork for the tailgate strap hinges, seats and other brackets  were handcrafted by Tony Walsh.

-Clive embellished his name and address in various places using a router, and this was afterward
handpainted with paint by Donna Sweeney of the Perth area.

-The gas tank was installed in the former factory location under the hinged front bench seat.

Clive Rodger has taken seven years from start to finish to bring his project to completion in 2009.
